Making a Homemade Stick Shaker
Jaime and her kiddos have been having so much fun making homemade instruments while we have been staying home! Today, we added homemade STICK SHAKERS to the lineup of instruments we have made while going live on facebook. This craft was fun! We started by hunting for the right sticks outside in our yard. I had each child find a stick shapped like the letter Y. An educational scavenger hunt! I used gardening shears to cut the sticks to the desired size.We then used these sticks for the instrument. The most difficult part is wrapping the sticks with yarn or string. We had a lot of cross stitch thread, so we used that. You could also use yarn, or just have them paint the sticks to decorate. There are many ways to get creative in decorating these stick shakers. We had some tambourine jingles at the house (random I know). You can purchase them on amazon. Jingle bells work as well. Or, you could possibly use upcycled squeeze applesauce caps, acorn lids (pre-drilled with a hole) or other fun items you find outside and around the house. Beads worked well as filler as well.
Here is what you will need:
- Sticks cut to the shape of a Y
- Colorful embroidery thread or yarn
- Scissors
- Gardening shears (to cut the sticks if neccesary)
- Beads
- Tambourine jingles, bells, or other fun items that can clang together to create the desired shake sound
Once you have made your homemade tambourines, hop over to our YouTube channel and find a song to play along to! Or, join one of ourLivestream Sprouts Classes and use them to make music with us! We hope you try this with your family and have fun making music together! Show us your STICK SHAKERS when you are done! Post to our wall, share on a post, or send them privately to Jaime.
